Feeling Blessed

I received this drawing from an amazing woman I met a few years ago. She comes to most of my Self Love Sister's Meetup Group events and now I proudly call her my friend! She completed a project for me I have been dreading (imputing hundreds of contacts and email addresses into my Constant Contact Database) and hid this picture inside the folder. Needless to say once I found it I was instantly in tears! I never equated sheets of names and email address to all the lives I've changed! Proof that what we do for others and how we treat them DOES indeed make an impact! How we approach those around us is vital to leaving our footprint in the world --which reminds me of a quote I love from Maya Angelou:

Takeaway: I know I've said this before but I'm going to say it again. Do your part. Spread joy not hate. Treat others how you would want to be treated. Leave a POSITIVE legacy behind you when you go! #bethelight

Cleanse Your Space

Smudging. I smudge frequently to clear out negative energy when I am feeling stuck, sluggish, depressed, or down. These feelings can be caused by stagnant energy in your field. Your field can include your emotional, energetic, mental, spiritual or physical body, and your environment—whether it’s your home, office, or other physical space. Stagnant or negative energy can have extremely detrimental effects on your mental and physical state and is even believed to manifest into a lack of happiness and success as well as pain and disease.

What is Smudging?

In many ancient cultures, including Native American traditions, herbs were burned in the ritual cleansing of a physical space, objects or individuals. The idea is that by burning certain herbs in a space, the smoke generated attaches itself to the negative energy and as the smoke dissipates, so does the negative energy. This burning of herbs can also be used for individual cleansing, after a particularly energetically depleting day or experience.

People often cleanse themselves and their space after difficult events, when communication problems seem to be arising, when they are feeling negative, during times of meditation or other ritual. Smudging is also excellent to practice prior to a gathering or ritual or as people arrive and before commencing a ritual or celebration. This leads to open minds and hearts and the eradication of any lingering negativity.

There are several herbs used commonly in “smudge sticks.” Herbs are bundled together and often tied with string. In ancient native American traditions, special smudge bowls were used but now, most smudging herbs come in stick from and are easy to use. Common smudging herbs include:

  • Sage, including White Sage
  • Cedar and other Pine derivatives
  • Lavender- for calming
  • Osha Root
  • Sweet Grass
  • Mugwort – which is also used for lucid dreaming and protection

How to Smudge

Firstly, any cleansing ritual must start with a clear and simple intention. Focusing on clearing out the negative energy and pushing it out of your space and mind is important!

Once you have your intention clearly in your mind, light the smudge stick and then blow out the flame. This allows the herbs to smolder and smoke without actively burning.

If you are cleansing a space, walk around the room or rooms slowly and focus on cleansing and clearing negative energy. You should focus on corners, behind doors and make sure you also smudge closets and drawers!!

She Loved Life

Today would have been my special friend, Opal's, 104th birthday! I think about her often, especially around the holidays. I called her my "Adopted Grandma" and guardian angel. She was my role model growing up. So self-less and happy no matter what was thrown her way! I'm reminded of her each and every time I hug someone (She always told me you need at least 6 a day!) but I miss her the most when I'm sad... her random phone calls, hand-written cards, and her heart-warming life stories!

Opal was an avid member of the Catholic Church in my hometown, volunteered at the nursing home when she was much older than all the residents, made amazing homemade bread, cinnamon rolls, sugar cookies, angel food birthday cakes with sticky frosting and sprinkles, drank beer with her pizza, took walks, loved singing, coffee, and was a fashionista-clip on earrings, pearls, broaches, (she let me keep a few-see photo below) and bright lipstick! Such a diva!

She was a big part of our family. Attended all of our Christmas concerts, holiday gatherings, graduations, birthday parties, some sporting events, took my brothers and I to our swimming lessons, and welcomed us into her faith-filled world

My one and only tattoo on my inner left wrist is a permanent memorial honoring her; an angel resembling henna.

Opal was a bright light in my life and the lives of many. My life purpose and mission has been to follow in her footsteps and light the way for others! To spread joy wherever I go! If you are ever in need of an angel ask for Opal! She is the BEST one I know! <3

Happy Birthday Beautiful Soul! XOXO

Love Does

I haven't had a whole lot of time to read as much as I used to but ordered a few books last week and finished this one Saturday! A true escape for me is laying out on a blanket in the grass with the sun shining down on me and disappearing with my nose in a book! :-)

Loves Does, by Bob Goff is a collection of short stories and experiences that show another opportunity for him to love God more, and share that love with the people around him. For Bob, the whole world is an invitation from God:

“I think God sometimes uses the completely inexplicable events in our lives to point us toward Him. We get to decide each time whether we will lean in toward what is unfolding and say yes or back away. The folks who were following Jesus in Galilee got to decide the same thing each day because there was no road map, no program, and no certainty. All they had was this person, an idea, and an invitation to come and see.”

Bob's not a pastor- he's a lawyer, husband and a father.  He's had every excuse to live an ordinary life. But instead, Bob says YES. And the stories that result from that answer will amaze you. The escapades with his friend, how he met his wife, his sailing excursion, and how he has helped complete strangers throughout the years.

Love Does has inspired me to dream bigger- To imagine that God is doing something bigger in me than I can grasp. I'm learning to live in the moment more, take more chances, and truly be present in my day to day activities. Each of us can spread joy and God's love! He uses us to do his work here on Earth. Be the light! His love is within us!  :-)

Paleo Alcohol Guide

With the holiday coming up I thought I would offer a few alcohol suggestions if you do happen to reach for that adult beverage over the 4th of July! Always remember to drink responsibly and have a designated driver.

Worst Alcohol Options:

Wine coolers (avoid all malted beverages in general)
Mixed drinks like mudslides or pina coladas (very high in sugar and calories!)
Liqueurs
Regular beer

Best Alcohol Options:

Red wine (Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot)
Hard cider (Crispin, Angry Orchard, Strong Bow)
Champagne
Gluten-free beer
Tequila
Potato vodka
Ciroc vodka- (made from grapes)
Whiskey
Rum

Best Mix Options:

Avoid colas and the like as a mix, and instead use:

Club soda or mineral water
La Croix Sparkling Water
Coconut water
Coconut milk
"Just" Brand Cranberry Juice
Ice cubes
Freshly squeezed juice (especially lemons and limes; less sugar)

Wishing you a happy, healthy, and SAFE Independence Day!
