Flex Friday

I've been focusing more on being strong and not skinny. This past year I've gained probably 10 pounds. I'm not sure because I stopped weighing myself. The scale does not control me anymore. Each day I work on my mindset and some days are definitely harder than others. I don't weigh 103 pounds anymore like in the other two photos. I was skinny then but wasn't happy.

Gaining weight is a mind game. My clothes are tighter and when the whole world has been focusing on losing weight I've been needing to gain weight. One thing I want to mention is that our bodies naturally fluctuate 5-7 pounds on any given day based on food and water intake, bloating, inflammation, hormones and etc. My takeaway today is this: Throw out the scale! Perfectionism can destroy you-both mentally and physically. Forgive yourself daily!

The Voice Inside My Head

Every day I walk by this dreaded thing at the gym.. I remember when I weighed myself daily.  If it read 104 pounds I would be happy and it would be a "good" day. When the scale would creep up to 106 or above I would freak out and say horrible things to myself in my head.  I call the voice, "ED".  ED stands for "Eating Disorder." This voice ruled most of my life and still comes back to haunt me some weeks.  It's the evil part of me that likes to show it's ugly head when I'm overly stressed or not feeling very confident in myself and my abilities.

Maybe you have a mean voice as well? Maybe it's stuck on autopilot: "you are fat," "you are worthless," "you are not good enough," "you never do anything right," "you suck at life," "you are disgusting," "you will never amount to anything," "you will never get married,"  "you are a failure"....

The picture below is one of the last slides in my Eating Disorder PowerPoint I give to schools, groups, and organizations. It depicts ED and how he can torture us if we let him.  He's that nasty person on our shoulder whispering FALSE statements into our ears.

I'm here to tell you the voice is lying and it's time to get rid of him! Brush him off, throw him in the back seat, lock up him up; he doesn't belong in your life anymore! You have the strength and power to put up a fight! YOU matter!  Don't let ED or anyone else tell you differently!

Holiday Body Love

Please know that on any given day your body can retain four to seven pounds of water weight. We are beings in constant state of change. You will have days which you look awesome and super ripped in the mirror and days you will look and feel bloated.  Other days you will look normal.  If you are a woman add hormonal fluctuations into the mix and be prepared to have your weight fluctuate as well.  Do NOT let what you think you see in the mirror bully your mind or compromise your mood during the day.  Your weight or your complexion does not determine your worth in this world!

Progress: Obedience

"Define your week by obedience and not a number on the scale."

The scale DOES help measure our progress, but it cannot tell us everything. It can't tell us if the problem is too much salt intake that is making us retain a pound or two of water. It cannot tell us if we actually lost a pound of fat but gained more muscle from weight training. And it can't tell us what time of the month it is and then give us automatic credit for the extra two pounds or so those glorious few days bring to us.

Ask yourself these questions instead:

1. Did I overeat this week on any day?
2. Did I move more and exercise regularly?
3. Do I feel lighter than I did this time last week?
4. Did I eat clean and follow my meal plan?
5. Did I drink enough water every day?
6. Did I eat in secret or out of anger, sadness, boredom, or frustration?
7. Did I feel that, at any time, I ran to food to fill a void in my life?
8. Before I stepped on the scale did I think I had a successful, healthy week?

I have always hated the scale, but maybe weighing yourself works for you? Measure your success and progress in whatever way resonates with you!  As long as you are making improvements you are headed in the right direction! :-) YOU CAN DO IT! Please share what has been working for you!

Guess What I Found in My Closet?

We leave this Thursday for my younger brother's wedding in FLORIDA!!! Perfect timing for some sun and fun considering it is -45 degrees outside right now with the windchill! ;-) This morning I decided to pack my suitcase and ended up cleaning out my entire closet! Haha! It happens!

I didn't expect to stir up so many emotions in the process. I love fashion and had a full wardrobe of tiny dresses, skinny jeans, short shorts, skirts, shoes, and a hundred other articles of clothing that I wore when I was at my lowest weight... I started trying them on and if you are a woman you know what it feels like when your clothes are too tight! If you have ever had any type of disordered eating or body image issues I'm sure you can relate to this.  Both sadness and a feeling of freedom washed over me...

I cannot fully explain how I felt this morning, but it was much different for me I am sure than most people who have gained or lost weight. I have a little more "junk in my trunk" these days but it means I am healthier and learning to accept my true self and love my body! I told my guy friend my butt has gotten bigger and he said, "Most guys like bigger butts anyway, so I bet you it's very sexy!"  LOL!! It's exactly what I needed to hear!! I know I am not fat by any means. I realize we all have different body shapes and what makes people beautiful is their confidence! I'm striving to be healthy and comfortable in my own skin! How about you? Also-why not wear clothes you feel amazing in? I filled up three large trash bags; looks like I need to go shopping soon! ;-)

Being Confident in a Healthy Body

This video struck a chord with me since I have been modeling for six years now. I've been up and down with my weight. Weighed 103 pounds at my lowest.  I remember one runway show I was in a few years ago...The designer told me I could not model for them again unless I gained 7 pounds.

Modeling is an industry where you are constantly criticized for the way you look. Too short, not thin enough, not the right bone structure, hair, eye color they are seeking. I have been extremely unhealthy and "thin" yet was not happy with my body.

"Health" is defined as: the state of being free of illness or injury. To me, healthy means eating fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, protein, in the right amounts, sleeping 8 hours a night to rest and heal my body, exercising daily and moving my body, getting a chiropractic adjustment weekly so my body can function at 100%, and working on my emotional health. You will notice there was no mention of a specific weight, number on a scale, or size in either definition.

As long as you are taking care of yourself, respecting your body, emotions, and needs you are doing well! Love every inch of your body and radiate the light within you! YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL no matter what anyone else thinks! Be confident in your own skin! :-) This model is a true beauty!!!
