Allergies- Oral Allergy Syndrome

7:19 PM Jackie Mart 0 Comments

Many people with seasonal allergies are affected by oral allergy syndrome, which can cause an itchy or prickling feeling in your mouth after eating certain foods. Essentially, the same immune reaction that occurs when we breathe in pollen can happen when we eat foods that mimic that pollen.

The Fix: If you think you may have oral allergy syndrome, try avoiding the foods that can cross-react with your specific allergy.

Birch: Kiwi, apples, pears, peaches, cherries, carrots, hazelnuts and almonds.

Grass: peaches, celery, tomatoes, melons and oranges.

Latex: bananas, avocado, kiwi and papaya

Ragweed: bananas, honeydew, cantaloupe, watermelons and tomatoes.

I also offer a blood allergy test called the ALCAT where you can test various foods, herbs, food additives, preservatives, pharmaceuticals, molds, and etc. Please contact me if you would like more info! 712.790.5883

Having a Bad Day?

8:25 PM Jackie Mart 2 Comments

I've been having a really tough day today. Started off on the wrong foot and cried before 8:00 AM! LOL! Saw this quote and it makes me think of my life.

"Failure is the opportunity to begin again, more intelligently." - Henry Ford

I've felt like I have failed many times and have had to regroup and start over and begin again. The more I think about it failing means I am challenging myself and taking chances. There are so many people that just go through the motions of life and never try anything new. I moved back to Iowa for 3 different reasons and even though it has been hard I know it was the best decision. Sometimes we need to stop, evaluate where we are, and make more intelligent plans to get ahead. I believe things happen in a sequence because they are meant to. God gives the strongest people the most challenging obstacles because he knows we can handle it! No matter where you are at in your journey, remember it may hurt for a short while but it will get better, eventually!! :-)  Sending you some love tonight! And a HUG because HUGS are kinda my thing!! ;-)

Be Well!!

Local Healthy Options!! There are a few- SURPRISE

8:42 PM Jackie Mart 0 Comments

It has been quite the transition moving back to Northwest Iowa after having easy access to organic and natural foods 5 blocks away in Minneapolis!! I have been searching and there are some great natural options in the surrounding areas.

Grocery Stores:

Wilder Thymes Natural Foods- Spirit Lake, Iowa (this is where I work a few days a week) :-)

Bulk items, snacks, drinks, spices, cooking ingredients, frozen, dairy & gluten-free foods, personal care items, natural cleaning supplies, local/organic beer and wine from all over the world! From Lisa's Lil Bakeshop come sandwiches to go, baked goods and take and bake entrees, and a wide selection of fruits, vegetables & herbs when in season from the organic farm in Wilder, MN.

St. Peter Food Cooperative- St. Peter, Minnesota

I've stopped here a few times on my way back from Minneapolis and LOVE IT! I buy wheatgrass here when I can and they have a very large bulk section and a fabulous deli with fresh foods and a sit down area where you can enjoy your meal!

Pomegranate Market- Sioux Falls, South Dakota

Reminds me of the food co-ops in Minneapolis! Check it out the next time you head to Sioux Falls shopping. Pack a cooler so you can take some food back with you!

Hy-Vee- a few organic and natural items (any location) - I'm not a huge fan of large corporate businesses, but do get a few things there since my office is right next to it! LOL!

New Shoots Farm Store- Emmetsburg, Iowa

I haven't ventured here yet but I've heard great things and they have grass-fed beef! Bakery, store, and cafe.

Restaurants:

Rabab's Neighborhood Bistro- Spirit Lake, Iowa

They have some gluten-free options and fresh made from scratch items! Cute little place and Rabab is a sweetheart!

The Wine Bar and Art Gallery- Arnolds Park, Iowa

I met the owner at the beginning of the summer-love her!  Nice, chill place to have some wine and they serve some healthier, gluten-free appetizers. The art gallery is attached which features local artists' work!

Local Organic Farmers:

Guritz Produce Farm-  Near Superior, Iowa

They offer fresh, organically grown vegetables, fruits and herbs, as well has fresh cut flowers, chickens, turkeys, pheasants, and rabbits. Also find them at the Spirit Lake and Spencer Farmer's Markets!

Iron Wind Certified Organic Produce- Graettinger, Iowa

Contact Rebecca Masters directly 712.790.3029.  She sells her produce in the Ace Hardware parking lot on Wednesday evenings!

Quench Your Thirst?

12:15 PM Jackie Mart 1 Comments

Fall sports are in full swing again! I have been seeing athletes consuming Gatorade and Powerade thinking it will rehydrate them! Think again! They are loaded with sugar, artificial colors, chemicals, not to mention, they contain minimal electrolytes!!
Here is an ingredient label on Gatorade-

Let me break it down for you.

Sucrose Syrup, Glucose Fructose Syrup- Here is how it is made. (highly processed) Sugar is combined with water and heat. Equal amounts of sucrose and water, along with a pinch of cream of tartar, are boiled until the sucrose is dissolved. The cream of tartar is an acetic acid which acts as a catalyst in the division of sucrose into glucose and fructose. The resulting syrup contains 50 percent fructose and 50 percent glucose. Sucrose syrup is an invert syrup because it is broken down into its simple components. Sucrose is sweeter than glucose and less sweet than fructose. When sucrose is turned into an invert syrup, the end product is sweeter than the sucrose before cooking. Beets are one of the top GMO foods and sugar is made from beets and sugarcane.

Did you know 4 grams of sugar listed on a food label is equivalent to 1 teaspoon of sugar? One gatorade contains 14 grams per serving and there are 4 servings per bottle! That is a whopping 56 grams of sugar, so 14 teaspoons of sugar!!  Sugar is more addictive than cocaine, feeds cancer cells, contributes to diabetes, and creates an acidic body where disease can develop.

Artificial Colors (Red 40, Blue 1, Yellow 5 and so on)-These are made from chemicals derived from PETROLEUM, which is also used to make gasoline, diesel fuel, asphalt, and tar! Artificial dyes have been linked to brain cancer, nerve-cell deterioration, and hyperactivity, just to name a few.Where it’s banned: Norway, Finland, Austria, France, and the United Kingdom.

Monopotassium Phosphate- A soluble salt which is used as a fertilizer, a food additive and a fungicide. It is a source of phosphorus and potassium and a buffering agent. When used in fertilizer mixtures with urea and ammonium phosphates, it minimizes escape of ammonia by keeping the pH at a relatively low level. It is also used as an additive in cigarettes.

Brominated Vegetable Oil- used to keep carpets from catching on fire! (this has recently been removed from Gatorade thank gosh!!)

One of my clients told me her doctor has been recommending these sports drink for dehydration. Please be aware of what you are putting in your body!

Better option: COCONUT WATER!!

Contains natural electrolytes, high in potassium, and refreshing!

And here are a few foods that are high in potassium that would be beneficial to consume:

Dulse, kelp, sunflower seeds, almonds, spinach, garlic, yams, peanuts, broccoli, Brazil nuts, raisins, kale, cooked beans.
