Staying in the Present Moment

4:46 PM Jackie Mart 0 Comments

Often, one of our biggest questions is, "What's going to happen?" We may ask this about our relationships, job, or life.  It's so easy to get tangled in the worrisome thoughts!

Worrying about what is going to happen blocks us from functioning effectively in the here and now- the present moment. It blocks us from learning the lessons today and has a negative effect on our future. When we worry we draw the negative thoughts into our lives. If you constantly are worried about money, your spouse cheating on you, your car not starting and so forth those things will eventually happen because of the energy you are drawing to it!

Things will work out for the best if we let them. Being present when talking to family, friends, clients, coworkers will fend off the worrying. Choose to be happy and TRUST that things will work out. Have a tough decision you need to make? Sleep on it, meditate, pray, and believe you will make the right choice! Sometimes we take life too seriously! Smile, have fun, breathe, and LIVE! :-)

Allergies, Excess Wax, Sinus Congestion, Colds, Flu? - Ear Candling Service Offered

12:36 PM Jackie Mart 0 Comments

What is Ear Candling?

Ear candling is a holistic procedure used to remove excess wax, draw out toxins and pollutants, cleanse the sinus cavities, improve hearing and other senses and revitalize the nerve endings. It is also thought to have a psychic, emotional and spiritual impact on a person as it draws out negative toxins and revives the energy flows throughout the body.

Because of all the intricate crevices in the ear, unbelievable amounts of debris can accumulate. This buildup creates a breeding ground for problems and can also interfere with correct hearing. Impacted wax can build up against ear ducts and can also block reception of incoming sound waves. This lifetime accumulation may explain some of the hearing problems we develop as we age. Yeasts, allergies or just wax build-up removed from the ear canal regularly will restore hearing, relieve tension or pressure in the ear and sometimes relieve other symptoms not consciously connected with the ear condition before the process. The moist warm dark conditions in the ear cause fast growth of many organisms. If excess ear wax blocks the ear it can cause pressure build-up from various organisms.

Clinical studies show that candida (yeast) often becomes established in the middle ear after one or two episodes of infection where an antibiotic has been used. Candling is believed to remove candida, yeasts, fungus, and remnants of past infections. The types of bacteria we currently fight in our ears include Streptococcus pneumonia, Staphylococcus aureus, Anaerobic bacteria, and Influenza A and B. Ear aches can be caused by mucus blown into the ear from the Eustachian tube. Ear candling will quite often release the pressure and relieve the pain.

Some of the benefits those undergoing ear candling have experienced include:

Removal of excess wax and allows better hearing, usually immediately
Stimulation and detoxification of the lymphatic system
Help in removal of parasites growing in the ear
Help in clearing mold caused by Candida yeast allergy
Sinuses are able to drain and flow freely reducing pressure
Improved balance and rejuvenation of the equilibrium

Beneficial relief may be obtained from ear candling for the following conditions:

Sinus discomfort congestion (reduced)
Head colds, flu and discomforts
Yeast infections
Parasites
Swimmers Ear
Ear Aches
Headache and sore throat
Allergy discomfort

What To Expect During Your Session

You will lie comfortably on your side resting your head on a pillow as the candling is performed. Hollow cones made from spiraled strips of cotton dipped in either beeswax or paraffin are used. The tapered end of the cone is gently placed in the ear. The other end is lit and the heat from the low-burning flame creates a vacuum-pulling effect. For your safety, a plate separates the burning end from your head to prevent any drippage of candle residue.

Periodically, the burned end will be cut back. When the candle burns down to about 2”, the process is then repeated for the opposite ear. Candling will take approximately 15-20 minutes per ear depending on the type of candle being used. During the treatment, you will normally hear some crackling, hissing and the "suction" sounds much like the gentle hum one hears when a seashell is placed against the ear.

Upon completion, an oil is swabbed in the ear with cotton to help protect from further infections from bacteria, yeast. etc. For the first 24 hours after candling, it is best to protect the ears from wind, cold, and excessive amounts of water. Within 24 hours the normal production of wax will again protect the ear. The candles will then be cut open to reveal the toxins deposited at the base.

Who Is Ear Candling Suitable For?

Young and old alike experience this process as a soothing, painless, simple therapy, which invokes deep relaxation and healing. I typically perform these on children over 3 years of age and up as well as adults.

Recent Client Testimonial:

"Amazing how much your sinuses clear up. I've tried it before. It is super....everyone should try it especially if you have any sinus issues at all!!! The virtues of ear candling are outstanding. Give it a try!!"

Acne- Zits Be Gone

2:01 PM Jackie Mart 0 Comments

Many people try using creams, prescriptions, and harsh chemical face cleansers to get rid of acne. The solution is inward!

Here are a Few Suggestions:

Acne and Candida go hand in hand. Candida is a bad yeast and  bacteria that grows in the body. You can develop it from using antibiotics, birth control pills, excess sugar in the diet, and drinking chlorinated water. Any type of skin condition stems from body toxicity, stress, hormonal imbalances, and nutrient deficiencies.

Try removing all sugar from your diet. Use Stevia instead or raw local honey. Limit grain intake- especially gluten because it causes inflammation in gut. Eczema is really gut inflammation!! Lower your fruit intake-berries and green apples have the lowest sugar content. Avoid hydrogenated oils- switch to extra-virgin, cold pressed organic coconut oil. (has anti-microbial properties- kills off the bacteria) Dairy products also cause allergic reactions  and can worsen the condition.

Foods to eat:

Foods high in fiber-chia seeds, flax seeds, almonds and other nuts, veggies. This will help balance out your blood sugar levels.  Consume more protein- organic chicken, turkey, organic eggs, grass fed beef, sprouted vegan protein (ask me about this), wild caught fish.

Supplements and More:
  • Probiotics- puts good bacteria in the gut, helps immune system, at least 50 billion IUS daily.
  • Zinc- will repair gut lining- 50 mg/day.
  • Antioxidants- elderberry extract- put in smoothies
  • Candida Cleanse
  • Fish Oil (Omega 3's)- helps with inflammation; aids in healing.
  • Face wash-use one containing tea tree oil, willow bark, aloe;  kills bacteria and moisturizes.

Clean Eating During Super Bowl Festivities

5:19 PM Jackie Mart 0 Comments

One of my clients said she dreads the Super Bowl parties because she never knows what she can eat and ends up gorging herself on the nachos, dips, mayo salads, and wings! My solution is to make and take a few clean eating recipes to the party and just eat what you bring! Here are a few that will be a hit at the party! (don't tell anyone they are healthier versions! ) ;-)

Baked Meatballs

Ingredients:

1/4 cup onions, minced
1 Tbsp. grape seed oil
2 pounds grass-fed ground beef
2 eggs
3/4 cup quinoa flakes
1/2 cup raw milk
1/8 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. pepper
2 tsp. onion powder
1/2 tsp. garlic powder

Directions:

1. Preheat oven 400 degrees F.
2. Grease baking sheet lightly with oil.
3. Cook onions in small skillet with grape seed oil
4. Mix other ingredients in bowl, and then add onions.
5. Roll into 2 inch balls, then spread out on baking sheet
6. Bake for 12 minutes.

Sweet Potato Fries

Ingredients:

1-1 1/2 lbs. sweet potatoes
1/4 c. grape seed or coconut oil
1/2 tsp. sea salt
1/2 tsp. paprika
1/4 tsp. cinnamon

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Peel potatoes and cut into strips about 1/2” wide on each      side. Place all ingredients in seal-able plastic bag and shake until potatoes are completely coated. Spread onto a baking sheet in a single layer.
2. Cook for 30 minutes, turning every 10 minutes.
3. Transfer immediately to a paper towel lined plate and serve warm.

Hummus

Ingredients:

  • 2 cans organic garbanzo beans (low sodium)
  • 1/4 c. raw sesame seeds
  • 1 Tbsp. olive oil
  • 1/4 c. lemon juice
  • 1 garlic clove, peeled
  • 1 tsp. cumin
  • Sea salt to taste

Drain and rinse garbanzo beans, reserving 1/4 c. liquid. Place all ingredients in a blender and blend. Add more water or olive oil until desired consistency is reached. Serve with fresh raw veggies or gluten-free crackers!

Boneless Buffalo Chicken Tenders

Here's another version of an All-American favorite! Typically these are fried in damaged oils (bad fats), loaded with refined flours, additives, and of course conventionally raised chicken. This recipe actually has organic chicken, good fats, extra nutrients in the breading and nothing artificial!

Ingredients:

  • 2 packages organic chicken tenderloins
  • 2 organic eggs
  • 1/2 cup finely ground almond meal
  • 1/4 cup coconut flour
  • sea salt
  • pepper
  • granulated garlic
  • hot sauce (check ingredients- no MSG, no sugar, no additives)
  • coconut oil (about 1/2 jar)

Directions:

Sprinkle chicken tenderloins with salt and pepper. Dip into egg and then almond / coconut flour mixture. For best results, refrigerate for about 15 minutes.

Meanwhile, heat coconut oil to medium/high heat in a non-teflon pan (stainless steel, cast iron or thermalon). Gently place chicken tenders in the pan in batches, doing only 4-5 at a time. Do not crowd the pan. When brown around the edges, flip and brown the other side. (Breading will be very fragile to be careful). Transfer to a baking dish and bake at 350 degrees until no longer pink in the middle.

When done, they can be eaten plain or made into buffalo tenders. Simply sprinkle with garlic powder and drizzle with hot sauce on both sides.

Grain-Free Personal Pizzas

Yield: Approx. six 6-8 inch pizzas

Ingredients:

For Crust

  • 2 cups almond flour
  • 2 cups tapioca starch/flour
  • 2 cups coconut milk
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt

For Toppings

  • Cheese- less is better! Organic preferred!
  • Sauce- no added sugar and low sodium
  • Olives
  • Bell Peppers
  • Onions
  • Mushrooms
  • Protein/Meat- preferably organic and grass fed without antibiotics or growth hormones

Directions:

For Crust:
1.Mix ingredients in either a blender or bowl until smooth.
2.Heat a skillet or griddle on medium-high heat and add a small amount of grass-fed butter.
3.Pour a thin layer of batter onto griddle or skillet and allow to cook until bubbles form.
4.Test to see if you can flip easily. If not, let cook longer.
5.Cook on other side until slightly golden-brown.
6.Preheat oven to 350 degrees F and place finished crusts in for a few minutes to crisp up.

For Toppings:
7.Place sauce on the pizza crusts and arrange cheese and toppings as desired. You may need to cook some of the toppings first if they are "liquidy", i.e. mushrooms, peppers, etc.
8.Bake until cheese is melted.
9.Cut into 4 pieces each and serve.

A Few Detoxifying Herbs

2:53 PM Jackie Mart 0 Comments

Did you know that TOXICITY is the number one cause of cancer?!

Cilantro- removes lead, mercury, arsenic, heavy metals (from China usually in food) from the body.  Add to chicken, salad, juices, smoothies.

Milk Thistle- cleanses and detoxes the liver and gallbladder, increases glutathione (antioxidant), detox from radiation, chemotherapy, statin drugs, environmental or pollution toxins.

Chlorella (seaweed)-  eliminates radiation ( from cell phones, microwaves, planes), binds to lead and mercury and pulls them out of the body.

Turmeric (curcumin- active ingredient)- there are over 2,000 studies that support liver detoxification, kills cancer cells, reduces inflammation and the risk of heart disease, and is very healing for the body and cells.   Add this spice to  your homemade hummus, smoothies, and as a rub on meats!

Visualization- What You Focus on is What you Attract and Become

6:44 PM Jackie Mart 0 Comments

The Power of Visualization- I've had the photo on the right as the background on my phone for a few months now and I look at it multiple times a day. I wanted abs instead of my bones showing like in the past. The photo on the left is me tonight. The two photos look very similar as you can see!

I encourage you to post a photo of what you want your body to look like EVERYWHERE! (kitchen cabinet, on your computer screen at work, bathroom mirror, car) Envision yourself in your dream body and it will become reality if you BELIEVE!! Eating clean and exercising doesn't hurt either! ;-)  Questions? Please ask!

Ask The Nutritionist- Quest Protein Bars

3:28 PM Jackie Mart 0 Comments

Question:

Hi Jackie!
What do you think of Quest Protein Bars? Are they okay? Thanks, I respect your knowledge!
-Marcia, Estherville, Iowa.

Answer:

Hi Marcia! I hope you are doing well!  They contain a lot of protein, but are not organic. Some contain sucralose (artificial sweetener) although stevia is also used. The whey protein does not come from grass-fed, antibiotic free cows. And remember any bar like this is still processed and protein isolates can contain MSG.

Here is a list of the ingredients in one:

VANILLA ALMOND CRUNCH

Ingredients:

Protein Blend (Whey Protein Isolate, Milk Protein Isolate), Isomalto-Oligosaccharides* (Prebiotic Fiber), Almonds, Water. Contains less than 2% of the following:Sea Salt, Lo Han Guo, Sucralose, Natural Flavors.

Better choice: LARABARS or here is a recipe I use to make my own!

Grain-Free No-Bake Cookie Dough Protein Bars

Ingredients:

1/2 c. Garden of Life RAW Vanilla Protein Powder

1/2 c. almond meal

1/2 c. almond butter (make sure ingredients are just almonds and sea salt!)

1/4 c. + 1 tbsp. extra virgin cold-pressed coconut oil

1/4 tsp. sea salt

1/2 tsp.  real vanilla

1/4 c. organic dark chocolate, chopped or you can use cacao nibs

Stir together until well combined. Press the dough into a pan to desired thickness, and freeze for 1-3 hours. Cut into bars, and store in the freezer or the refrigerator.

The Dreadful Cottage Cheese Thighs-Cellulite

2:59 PM Jackie Mart 2 Comments

Almost everyone has it- you sit down, cross your legs, and it's as clear as day... those dimply thighs!! UGH!  Women struggle with cellulite the most, usually on their butt and thighs. What are the causes and how can you get rid of it once and for all?

4 Causes of Cellulite:

1. Increased Fluid Retention
2. Decrease in Circulation
3. Increased Body Fat
4. Weak Cellular Structure (Tissues)

Here are a few suggestions that can help!

Fluid Retention: You can reduce fluid retention and bloating by getting  rid of the salt and sugar in your diet and increasing your potassium intake.  Processed foods are very high in sodium. (anything that is pre-packaged or prepared or that comes from a box or a can and fast food) A few foods rich in potassium: coconut water, parsley, avocados sweet potatoes bananas, and organic yogurt.

Circulation: Exercise is one of the best ways to increase circulation. It gets your heart pumping and the blood circulating throughout your body! Cayenne Pepper is spice you can add to your meals which also speeds up your metabolism!

Body Fat: Avoid sugar, limit or eliminate grains (even grains turn into sugar in your body within 4 seconds!) This spikes your blood rate and your body stores it as fat.

BURST Training  (Interval)- spikes your heart rate and boost metabolism; body burns fat for up to 48 hours after! Contact me if you would like more details!

Pilates, Barre Classes- great for strength and building lean muscle.

Cellular Structure: Get more Amino Acids (from protein sources) and Essential Fatty Acids (EFA's): fish oil, coconut oil, wild caught fatty fish, raw nuts, seeds, and GLA (found in hemp seeds, borage oil, chia and flax seeds!)

Other Things that are Very Beneficial: Ion Detox Foot Bath and Herbal Detox Body Wraps (2 services I offer) and dry skin brushing.

DIY Perfume

10:06 PM Jackie Mart 0 Comments

Yes I am a girlie girl! I love wearing lipstick, heels, and perfume! :-) I have been using essential oil as perfume for about 6 years now. Other perfumes are loaded with chemicals!

Who says smelling delicious has to be toxic? Here is a VERY EASY way to make your own DIY roll on perfumes at home using essential oils. You can use any essential oil (or blend) you want! The great thing about using essential oils is that they not only smell fantastic, they actually have beneficial properties that can help you relax, calm, de-stress, and uplift your mood (depending on which ones you use).

Ingredients:

Fractionated coconut oil
Jojoba oil
Essential oils of choice
Roll-on tubes 10ml
Dropper (optional)

Process:

1) Fill each 10ml roll-on bottle with the following:
  • 1.5 tsp fractionated coconut oil
  • 1/2 tsp jojoba oil
  • 8-12 drops of essential oil of your choice (use more if you want a stronger perfume, I prefer it more subtle)
2) Snap on the roller
3) Shake as needed to combine.

Simple! I made two different fragrances: Whisper and Mental Clarity! Try it!

Where Do you Shop?

12:41 PM Jackie Mart 0 Comments

If I could give one piece of health advice to everyone I love I’d ask them to shop in a place where they can get the best quality groceries and produce available. Changing my grocery store has been fundamental in changing my health for the better. Typical huge wholesale box stores and conventional supermarkets are stocked with so many bad chemicals and ingredients it can make your head spin.  (Hy-Vees, Fareways, Rainbow Foods, Lunds, Byerlys, Cub Foods, Wal-Mart, etc)

The top BIG FOOD companies have created so many foods that are full of anything but whole ingredients It’s cheaper for them to make these chemically made up fake foods than to use real whole and nutritious ingredients. Many of these chemicals and ingredients are banned in other countries but they still allow them here in the US.

Alternative health stores have been around forever, but in the recent past they have become more mainstream allowing someone to make an easy transition to healthier organic whole, packaged and convenience foods. I understand that some big name conventional grocery stores are making an effort to include more organic produce and organic convenience foods but, they still carry all the chemical laden foods too. This makes shopping there 10 times harder because unless you know the brand and trust it it means reading lots of labels and deciphering chemical names of ingredients. Even natural health food stores carry products I would not consume myself.  (Just because you shop at Whole Foods, Trader Joes, or a Food Coop does not mean you should buy all the products they sell) A natural food store in the Twin Cities where I used to work used canola oil (a top GMO food) in everything they made in the deli. This is why it is so important to do your own research or contact an educated professional for help.

If health food stores are not an option in your area I can help you navigate through the conventional stores to avoid the most toxic foods. I've done many large group and one-on-one tours with clients. I believe education is the best thing! You don't know, what you don't know, right? :-) Please contact me if you have more questions! 712.790.5883 or Jackie@OptimumWellnessMN.com

Are you up for a challenge this month?

One simple way to increase your intake of fruits and vegetables is to incorporate smoothies into your dietMaking a smoothie every morning as part of a daily routine can dramatically improve your health!

Smoothies are blended drinks that combine leafy greens with fruits, veggies and healthy fats, such as almonds, hemp seeds, flax and coconut. Popular leafy greens include spinach, kale, rainbow or Swiss chard, mint, parsley and collard greens. I prefer to use all fresh, raw ingredients, but using frozen fruit creates a thicker, ice cream-like texture.

Health Benefits of Smoothies:

*Provide you with the full spectrum of nature's bioavailable vitamins, nutrients, and antioxidants
*Give you plenty of natural fiber to ensure excellent digestion
*Increase energy
*Weight Loss
*Help empower your immune system to protect you from illness

Need some accountability? Forward this to a friend and complete the challenge together!

*Challenge ends on 3/31/14. You can start at any time as long as you complete it by the end of March! You must consume 1 smoothie per day for 30 consecutive days.

Florida Trip- Short But Sweet

8:15 PM Jackie Mart 0 Comments

Hello! I made it back from Florida yesterday! My younger brother got married on the Siesta Key Beach Saturday to an amazing woman! I cried when I saw her walking down the aisle only because I saw the look on my brother's face when he saw her!! I had a wonderful time and wanted to share a few photos with you.  I was only there for 4 days and it was chilly (well, chilly for Florida weather..) and cloudy but I made the most of it.

I managed to find a gym on the island. (it was the only one) It was small, open, and quaint. If I ever own my own gym I would want one like this! Where you can workout outside in the sun! Who says you cannot stay fit while on vacation! I even took my second ever gym selfie.. please do not mind the boob sweat! LOL!

I managed to get a head cold while we were there so hit up the Nirvana Juice Bar where they had freshly juiced organic green juices and smoothies!
