Is Your Makeup "Clean"?

Above is a what you are putting on your skin and getting absorbed into your body if you use conventional makeup!  You literally EAT what you put on your skin. Women bombard themselves daily with chemicals and toxins from the moment they wake up to when they lay down in bed at night.  When you look at the ingredient list on your cosmetics and skin care products you should be able to pronounce and identify what each and every ingredient is. If you don't recognize something it is more than likely a chemical.

A few signs and symptoms that are linked to chemical and toxin overload:

*I offer two very affordable detox services including a toxicity assessment where we can pinpoint what toxins you are putting in, on, and around your body.  After your appointment you will walk away less toxic and with a whole list of natural alternatives to use! (I do not sell products, just services, health, and education) :-)  Interested? Please contact me for more information! 712.790.5883 or Jackie@OptimimWellnessMN.com

Not Getting Enough Zzzz's?

Sleep:The cure all.  Whenever I am feeling down or sick I go to bed earlier or allow myself to sleep in. It does wonders for my emotional state and sanity!  Your body needs adequate sleep to heal itself physically and psychologically.

The Circadian Cycle is natural physiological cycle of about 24 hours that persists even in the absence of external cues.

The cycles of light and dark that result from the movements of the sun and planets affect nearly all living creatures.  Our sleep schedules are still very much in tune with the sun and our environment.  Whenever light stimulates your skin or eyes, regardless of the source, your brain and hormonal system think its morning.  In response to the light, your hormonal system naturally releases cortisol. Cortisol is an activating hormone that is released in response to stress, light being a form of electromagnetic stress. This activates the body and prepares it for movement, work, combat or whatever may be necessary for survival.

Why You Can’t Sleep:

Stress- Night time worries and wakefulness.

Nutrition- Deficiencies can lead to difficulty falling or staying asleep.  A lack of magnesium –key in relaxing muscles- is associated with insomnia, and calcium is important in the production of melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep cycles.

Sleep Apnea- A chronic, serious condition that affects millions of people.  Marked by pauses in breathing or shallow breathing during sleep that may last from a few seconds to more than a minute and can occur as many as 30 times or more per hour.  If oxygen levels drop because breathing is shallow or interrupted, the brain is triggered to wake up, so the overall quality of sleep is dramatically affected.

Hormonal Shifts- Women are three times more likely than men to have disturbed sleep patterns, and hormonal shifts may be one reason.  When hormone levels surge or drop during pregnancy, menstrual cycles, or menopause, sleep can be dramatically affected.

Caffeine and Alcohol Consumption

Sleep Environment- Bedroom too warm, poorly ventilated, loud, uncomfortable mattress, pillow….screen time (computer, TV) , exercise, arguing too close to bedtime.

Excito-toxins- Aspartame, hydrolyzed vegetable protein, and MSG are considered excite-toxins, a class of chemicals that overstimulates neurons, causing them to fire rapidly and ultimately die.  This effect is especially pronounced in the parts of the brain that control sleep cycles.  MSG is found in large quantities in processed foods.

Blood Sugar- If you blood sugar is unstable, you’ll likely wake at least once in the middle of the night as your body becomes mildly hypoglycemic and your brain calls out for energy.  High-carb bedtime snacks are of the main culprits, but even a sugary dessert can impact blood sugar and interrupt sleep.  Spicy, oily, or heavy meals can also upset slumber.

Optimizing your Sleep/Wake Cycle:

*Get to sleep by 10:30 pm.
*Minimize your exposure to bright lights, fluorescent lights, for at least 2 hours before going to bed. This includes your laptop and phone!
*Sleep in a room that is completely dark.
*Avoid the consumption of stimulants after lunch.
*Eat right for your metabolic type, particularly dinner.
*Drink plenty of water. Half your body weight in ounces of water each day (ex: 130/2=65 ounces)
*Exercise!
*Try unplugging all electrical appliances in bedroom.
*Chiropractic
*Acupuncture
*Massage

More Tips:

  1.  Try meditation or yoga before bed; deep breathing
  2.  Use black out curtains
  3.  Wear socks to bed-keeps your body heat in
  4.  Wear ear plugs-allows you to hear your heartbeat; blocks outdoor noises
  5.  Use an "eye pillow" that blocks out light,TempurPedic $42
  6.  Use an essential oil diffuser, air purifier
  7. Best essential oils for sleep: lavender, chamomile, mandarin (DoTerra, Young Living, Veriditas)
  8.  Take the TV out of the bedroom
  9.  Wear non-restrictive clothing to bed
  10.  Take a warm bath w/ Epsom salt before bed
  11.  Drink herbal tea (Sleepy Time/ Nighty Night Tea)
  12. Eat foods that contain L-tryptophan.
  13. Melatonin/Sleep Supplements
  14. Have sex-releases serotonin; helps you to relax.
  15. Listen to soft, peaceful music.  (App-Relax Melodies)
  16. Drink warm milk with turmeric (almond milk may also be used)
  17. Take a detox bath- 1 cup apple cider vinegar, 1 cup sea salt, 1 cup Epsom salt, 6 drops lavender essential oil.

The 3:00 PM Wall-Increase Energy

Commonly Asked Question: I have low energy and feel fatigued all the time, what would help?

B-Vitamins- These are the vitamins that get depleted first when stressed.

B-Vitamin rich foods: spinach, parsley, broccoli, beets, turnips, mustard greens, asparagus, romaine lettuce, lentils, bell peppers, turnip greens, almonds, brussel sprouts, oranges, eggs, fish, sunflower seeds, beans.

Vitamin D3- have you ever gotten yours checked? Simple blood test you can ask for at the doctor's office. Most people are on the low end especially if they do not supplement! (I offer Vitamin D testing as a service. Please contact me for more information)

Juice-Cleanses body and gives your digestive system a break! Nutrients get absorbed right away giving you a burst of energy.

Greens Powder-helps alkalize the body. Usually contains wheat grass, alfalfa, spirulina, chlorella, barley grass, spinach, broccoli.

Exercise-Get your blood and body moving! Interval Training is one of the best types of workouts to do. Other names for interval training: Tabata, BURST, HIIT, Crossfit, Kosama etc.

Green/Herbal Teas-Green tea contains natural caffeine and contains the amino acid, L-theanine, which increases alertness. With L-theanine working to increase mental energy and caffeine also working to increase energy, the result is a steady, clear state of increased energy without the jittery side-effects.

English Breakfast Teas-use as an alternative to coffee in the mornings!

Eat every 3-4 hours stabilizes blood sugar levels. Your energy will be even kill all day long if you eat protein, a veggie, and a healthy fat every time you eat! Ditch the sugars!

Drink more water-you are probably dehydrated if you are not drinking half your bodyweight in ounces of water each day!

Take a technology break-computers, cell phones, and electronic devices zap our energy! Try going on a camping trip or turning off your phone and computer at night. Read a book! (preferably a real physical book and not one on a Kindle or Nook)

Take a walk- great for getting fresh air and taking a mental break! Nature is very therapeutic and grounding!

Foods to Support Your Thyroid

Thyroid problems affects millions of people around the world believe it or not!  The conditions resulting from thyroid problems can be extremely serious. As a regulator of hormone production and metabolism, the thyroid needs to function properly to maintain optimal health. The good news is, there are nutritional steps you can take to help support your thyroid!!

The thyroid needs very specific nutrients to maintain proper function: iodine, selenium, iron, and zinc.

The following foods provide quality dietary sources of these necessary elements. They also include complete nutritional content including quality protein, high quantities of necessary vitamins (such as B vitamins needed in hormone production), antioxidants and more!

1. Dulse Seaweed

Sea vegetables are a great source of iodine and dulse seaweed has been found to offer the most consistent
and highest concentrations of iodine. This purple-brown sea vegetable is full of potassium and is an excellent source of protein. (In addition to dulse seaweed, arame, kombu, nori, sea palm and wakame are also quality iodine and nutrient sources.)

2. Fish

Fish is a great source of dietary iodine, plus the amazing benefits of omega-3 fatty acids which have been found to contribute to a healthy heart. Deep sea fish such as cod and haddock contain the highest densities of dietary iodine. (Be sure fish is wild caught, NOT farm raised)

3. Coconut Oil

Coconuts are an excellent food all around, and the oil from coconut has been used as a healing food for a long time. Coconut oil contains essential fatty acids needed for proper metabolic function. These fatty acids are easily assimilated by the body and contribute to thyroid function, thyroid hormone production and regulating the metabolism.

4. Beans

Beans are a good source of zinc and iron. They also provide quality proteins and are an excellent source of B vitamins, vitamin C, and fiber.

5. Liver and Kidney Meat

Although not appropriate for vegans or vegetarians, these organ meats, especially beef liver, provide iron, zinc and selenium as well as high-quality proteins. They also provide a more complete, nutrient-dense source of calcium, potassium, Vitamins A, C and D, and the B vitamins than most fruits and vegetables. Again, if you go this route, select products from organic, vegetarian-fed animals.

6. Almonds

While most nuts are an excellent source of proteins, minerals, vitamins and fiber, almonds provide a potent
source of nutrients needed by the thyroid. Almonds combine quality values of iron, selenium and zinc with essential B vitamins and high protein content.

7. Turkey

For a lean protein source, turkey is an excellent source of selenium. It also contains iron and essential amino acids. Again, opt for organic, vegetarian fed animals.

8. Dark Green Leafy Vegetables

Why choose one when any of the dark leafy veggies will work? Spinach, kale, collard greens, swiss chard, mustard or turnip greens are all a great source of iron, B vitamins (needed for hormone secretion), Vitamins A, C and D, magnesium and their incredible antioxidants. These superfoods not only supply the nutrients the thyroid needs, they also help protect overall health.

Sick? Can I Still Exercise?

It's that time of year again... We get run down due to holiday stress, parties, sweet sugary treats, breathing indoor air, and the snow and cold temperatures make it harder to stay motivated to get out and get moving. All this taxes our immune system.  Sick? Here are some guidelines to follow regarding exercise.

If your symptoms are above your neck, it’s usually OK to exercise at a lower intensity than you are used to. This includes symptoms such as:

  • Runny nose
  • Nasal congestion
  • Sneezing
  • Sore throat
  • Headache
If you have enough energy to tolerate it, increasing your body temperature by sweating from exercise will actually help to kill many viruses.
The key to exercising when you’re sick is to do so carefully. Over-exercising will place more stress on your body, which can suppress your immune system, so keep the intensity of your workouts to a moderate level if you're sick; just go for a brisk walk or tone down your regular workout.

It’s generally advised that you AVOID exercise if you have symptoms that are "below your neck," such as:

  • Fever
  • Coughing or chest congestion
  • Fatigue
  • Widespread body and muscle aches
  • Vomiting, upset stomach and/or stomach cramps
No matter what your symptoms, be sure to listen to your body. If you don’t feel up to it, and need rest, then take some time off!!
I cannot stress enough that if you don’t feel well, do not do your full, normal exercise routine because it can stress your immune system more and prolong your illness!
High-intensity exercise should be avoided when you’re sick, because any kind of intensive exercise boosts production of cortisol, a stress hormone which inhibits the activity of natural killer cells—a type of white blood cell that attacks and rids your body of viral agents.

Your Body Needs Fat!! Healthy Oils and Dangerous Oils

Low-Fat Diets vs. Vital Fat Your Body Needs

The fear of weight gain has caused most of us to think that all fat is bad.  Oil is a fat – so many of us avoid it.  However, while it’s true that some fats and oils are dangerous for your health. Not all fats are bad; some are actually very beneficial!

Healthy Oils include olive oil, avocado oil, raw walnut oil, coconut oil, hemp oil, flax oil, and grape seed oil.  They provide your body with the nutrients it needs to build cell membranes, absorb vitamins, cushion vital organs, protect you from extreme temperatures, build hormones, lower inflammation, and make up some of your brain tissue.

Dangerous Oils are those which have become altered in the manufacturing process as in the case of hydrogenated oils (trans fats).  These oils have no place in your diet!  Since your body can not recognize or metabolize these fats, they naturally contribute to weight gain by clinging to cells and prevent detoxification.  These damaged fats also cause inflammation, damage and contribute to heart attacks and stroke.  Dangerous oils include hydrogenated oils (trans fats) and vegetable oils, specifically canola oil.

Canola oil- there is no such thing as a wild canola plant growing anywhere on our planet.  Canola oil is a genetic manipulation of rapeseed oil and is man-made. Avoid canola oil in your diet at all costs.

Hydrogenated oils – the world is waking up to the realization that altering foods is harmful to consumers.  Hydrogen, forced into otherwise non-hydrogenated oils, causes these fats to become more stable at room temperature, thereby extending the shelf life of candy bars and packaged foods.  Never purchase any product that reads “hydrogenated” or “partially hydrogenated” on the ingredients label.  Beware of labels that read “trans fat free,” because manufacturers can modify serving sizes to meet “trans fat free” standards, while still loading their products with hydrogenated oils.

Vegetable oil is cheap and is found in nearly every packaged food and salad dressing in the grocery store.  They include soybean oil, corn oil, cottonseed oil, canola oil, and others simply labeled as “vegetable oil.”

Margarine – whether your margarine is made from trans fats or vegetable oils, it falls into the category of damaged fats and should be avoided.  It is one molecule away from being plastic!! Ants will not even eat margarine if left outside!! Butter is much closer to its natural source and state – making it a superior choice over margarine. Try ghee, which is a clarified butter.

Other sources of healthy fats include: grass-fed meat, omega-3 eggs, walnuts, avocado, fish, flaxseeds, chia seeds, and etc.

Count Chemicals, Not Calories!!!

Earlier this week I was at the YMCA and overheard a woman raving about the "Skinny Cow Ice Cream Treats" and how they "taste the same as regular ice cream sandwiches, but without all the calories!"  I wanted to butt in and same something but bit my tongue since I was eavesdropping...

I decided to do a little research when I got home and this is what I found:

Skinny Cow Vanilla Ice Cream Sandwich Ingredient List
And only 140 calories and 15 grams of sugar!! Think you are eating something healthy? Think again!! Take a look at the ingredient list. Can you pronounce and name anything on it? Do you know what these ingredients are? Man made chemicals, sugar, food additives, artificial flavors and sweeteners. These are toxins and your body does not know what to do with them when ingested and have adverse affects on your health!!

A lot of health care professionals and popular fitness gurus talk about calories in equals calories out. What are they trying to say?  Regardless of the type of food that you consume, your body will utilize it exactly the same. If you desire to remain the same weight, the amount of calories that you eat should be the amount of calories burned by your body.  If you want to lose weight, cut down on what you eat and exercise more.

The problem with this concept is that all nutrition is not the same and everyone’s body does not burn and utilize the nutrients the same. Hormones in the body and the negative impact of lifestyle, stress and medications play a significant role in efficiency of burning calories.

The advice is to eliminate all processed food choices and eat as fresh, raw and organic as possible. These food choices have been created for consumption and will aid in fueling your body with the right nutrients to balance hormones, reduce chemical food stress and encourage healing in your body!!

Count chemicalsNOT calories for health!!!

Do You Wake up at the Same Times in the Middle of the Night?

I have been waking up alot lately in the middle of the night and decided to research it a little! I figured it was my adrenal glands and cortisol levels because I have been very stressed lately.  I looked into what Traditional Chinese Medicine says and found some pretty interesting information about why you feel differently at different hours of the day! Thought I would share this website with you!
