Whiter Teeth Without Chemicals

Oil pulling is one of my morning rituals when I'm getting ready to start my day!

Used primarily in Ayurvedic medicine, oil pulling — known as gandusha in Ayurveda — specifically coconut oil pulling, is an oral detoxification procedure that’s simply done by swishing a tablespoon of coconut oil in your mouth for 10–20 minutes.

Oil pulling works by cleaning (detoxifying) the oral cavity in a similar way that soap cleans dirty dishes. It literally sucks the dirt (toxins) out of your mouth and creates a clean, antiseptic oral environment that contributes to the proper flow of dental liquid that’s needed to prevent cavities and disease!

This has been used for centuries as a traditional India remedy to:

Treat tooth decay
Kill bad breath
Heal bleeding gums
Prevent heart disease
Reduce inflammation
Whiten teeth
Soothe throat dryness
Prevent cavities
Heal cracked lips
Boost the immune system
Improve acne
Strengthen gums and jaws

How To Oil Pull:

Make sure to oil pull first thing in the morning right after you get out of bed — before you brush your teeth or drink anything.

Gently swish 1–2 tablespoons of coconut oil in your mouth and between your teeth for 10–20 minutes, making sure that you don’t swallow any of the oil. (I like to mix it with 1-2 drops of peppermint essential oil)

Spit out the oil in the trash (not the sink so it doesn’t clog up the plumbing) and immediately rinse your mouth out with warm water.

Finally, brush your teeth as normal.

Cheap and Effective

Epsom salts uses you might not have known about!

Acne treatment mask: 1 egg white, 1/2 tsp. B5 powder, 1 tsp. aloe vera gel, 1 tsp Epsom salts, 1-2 drop thyme essential oil blended together. Smooth onto your face for 15 minutes then rinse and pat dry. Sounds kind of gross, works really well!

Skin exfoliant: Wet skin and apply 1/2-1 tsp. of Epsom salts to the skin in a circular motion to help remove dead skin and build up. Simple yet effective!

Soothe insect bites: Add 2 Tbsp of Epsom salts to 1 cup of warm water. Soak a wash cloth in the solution and apply to the bite to reduce inflammation and irritation. This is also good in the summer if you get a sunburn!

Ease pinkeye: Wash you face and around your eyes (not IN your eye) with a solution of warm water and Epsom salts to help clear the infection.

Even "Healthy" Foods Can Cause Your Body Grief

Even "Healthy" Foods Can Cause Your Body Grief

In this day and age we know so much more about our relationship to food than our predecessors, and the way we eat and think about food has become almost unrecognizable to our grandparents' generation. One example of this is our awareness of food allergies, a condition that has recently entered the collective consciousness. Most of us know someone who is allergic to such foods as wheat and dairy, and we may even be prone to such an allergy. Understanding how our bodies react to food, and making the necessary adjustments in our diet, can have a profound effect on our whole energy system, and can be the key to shifting our mind into a state of greater clarity!

When we are continuously exposed to a food that gives us an allergic reaction, we feel lethargic, foggy-headed, or as if we always have a low-grade sinus infection. Other symptoms can include nausea, digestive difficulties, skin problems, and difficulty breathing. Many of us have been fighting these symptoms our whole lives without realizing that getting relief could be as simple as cutting a particular food out of our diet. When we do, we feel as if we are waking up out of a fog, and our whole system, cleared of substances that work against it, benefits.

Many people see skin improvements, they sleep better, have more energy, and feel able to think more clearly. When we feel less than well, testing ourselves, or getting tested by someone else, for food intolerance's/sensitivities may be a good place to start!  Even common foods such as kale, cranberry, pomegranates, mushrooms, and Romaine lettuce have come up in testing!  If you are interested in learning more please contact me and I will share the food, chemical, herb, mold intolerance/sensitivity testing I offer as a service to my clients! It's a simple blood test and can be done anywhere. I have a mobile blood draw come to you and typically get the results in my inbox in 7-10 days.

Real Food for Dry Skin

DIY masks are a fun, affordable way to manage dry skin! Here is a recipe I make for my Self Love Sisters Detox Spa Parties:

Mash 1/2 an avocado + 1/2 a ripe banana until they’re smooth and creamy. Then add in one egg white and a little bit of extra virgin olive oil. (All organic)

Spread the mask on your face and leave for 15 minutes.  Rinse with warm water. Your skin will feel creamy and soft!

  • Vitamin A in bananas fades dark spots and blemishes while smoothing out rough skin.
  • Fatty acids in avocados and olive oil help hydrate skin and give it a nice glow.
  • Egg proteins help maintain the elasticity of skin. An egg contains about 69 different proteins which have the power to reduce fine lines and give temporary relief for the deep ones.  Eggs are also high in collagen (After we hit age 25, collagen production declines which leads to loose skin and wrinkles. Collagen makes your skin look firmer, smoother, and aids in renewing and repairing skin cells).

Natural Beauty- Foods for Glowing Skin

Eat your Fruits and Veggies

Fruit and vegetables contain powerful antioxidants that help to protect skin from the cellular damage caused by free radicals. Free radicals are caused by smoking, pollution and sunlight and can cause wrinkling and age spots. Eat a rainbow of colorful fruit and vegetables and aim for at least five portions a day. Beta-carotene, found in pumpkin, carrots and sweet potatoes, and lutein, found in kale, papaya and spinach are potent antioxidants, important for normal skin cell development and healthy skin tone.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is also a super antioxidant. It is needed for a strong immune system, radiant skin and helps blemishes heal properly. The best sources are blackcurrants, blueberries, broccoli, guava, kiwi fruits, oranges, papaya, strawberries and sweet potatoes. They all help to produce collagen that strengthens the capillaries that supply the skin.

Cut out Crash Diets

Repeatedly losing and regaining weight can take its toll on your skin, causing sagging, wrinkles and stretch marks. Crash diets are often short in essential vitamins too. Over long periods of time this type of dieting will reflect on your skin!

Selenium

Selenium is a powerful antioxidant. It works alongside other antioxidants such as vitamins E and C and is essential for the immune system. Studies suggest that a selenium-rich diet can help to protect against skin cancer, sun damage and age spots. One way to boost your intake is to eat Brazil nuts. Just four nuts will provide the recommended daily amount (RDA). Mix Brazil nuts with other seeds rich in vitamin E as a snack or salad sprinkle. Other good sources are fish, shellfish, eggs, tomatoes and broccoli.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E protects skin from oxidative (cell) damage and supports healthy skin growth. Foods high in vitamin E include almonds, avocado, hazelnuts, and pine nuts.

Drink up

Skin needs moisture to stay flexible. Even mild dehydration will cause your skin to look dry, tired and slightly gray. Drink half your bodyweight in ounces of water EACH day at least. Example: 150 pounds/2 = 75 ounces of water.  If you work in an office, keep a large stainless steel or glass bottle of water on your desk to remind you to drink. Herbal teas are good too. Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, both can age the skin.

Fat is your Friend

Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats - the types found in avocados, fish, nuts and seeds, and coconut and olive oil - provide essential fatty acids which act as a natural moisturizer for your skin, keeping it flexible.

Opt for omega-3

Make sure you get enough omega-3 fats. These are essential fatty acids which mean they cannot be made in the body and must be obtained through the diet. You will find omega-3s in oily, fatty fish and plant sources such as flaxseed, walnuts, chia seeds, hemp seeds. Omega-3 fats encourage the body to produce anti-inflammatory compounds, which can help skin, particularly inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis.

Go for low-GI carbs

Eat plenty of beans, vegetables, and other slow-releasing carbohydrates. These release sugar into the bloodstream gradually, providing you with a steady supply of energy and leaving you feeling satisfied for longer and therefore less likely to snack. Avoid high GI carbohydrates like bread and sugary drinks, as they lead to production of insulin, which may damage collagen and accelerate wrinkles.

Zinc

Zinc is involved in the normal functioning of the sebaceous glands in the skin (which produce oil) and helps to repair skin damage and keep skin soft and supple. Zinc-rich foods include fish, lean red meat, poultry, raw nuts, raw seeds and shellfish.

Neem Oil-Natural Cure

Neem is considered a super-herb and addresses a wide range of health problems. Indian households have been using neem in their daily lives for thousands of years. It is used in cooking, lotions, shampoos, medicines, religious ceremonies, and as a natural pesticide

Neem is a tropical evergreen tree that grows from 50 to 130 feet tall found primarily in India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.  Neem is currently being researched in India for the treatment of cancer. Every part of the neem tree can be for used – leaves, bark, roots, seeds, fruit, and fragrant flowers.

Neem leaves have been used traditionally as a blood cleanser due to their antiviral, antifungal, antiparasitic, and antiseptic qualities. Neem leaves are also used to treat many eye disorders, skin conditions such as acne and rosacea, stomach ulcers, poor appetite, diabetes, gum disease, fever, liver disorders, and arthritis. It is also great for the heart and used to prevent blood clots.

Neem oil is used in soaps, lotions, face masks, shampoos, and toothpastes. It helps treat fungal infections, lice, dry scalp, dandruff, premature graying of the hair, gingivitis, and skin disorders and soothes dry, itchy, red, irritated skin. It has also been used for chicken pox to relieve the associated skin irritation caused by the chickenpox virus and has the ability to improve overall skin health by fighting the bacteria that causes pimples and acne. Unlike antibiotics, neem fights bacteria without causing bacterial resistance over time. I have been using it on my face at night the last few weeks and my acne is gone! Especially the trouble spots on my forehead!

Please message me if you would like to know the high-quality brand I use!

*CAUTION: If you are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, you should not consume products with neem because it can result in miscarriages and toxicity to infants.
