Strength

7:59 PM Jackie Mart 0 Comments

Tonight I'm feeling inspired! Had a good day and realize I was put here for many reasons. I feel amazing when I am helping and listening to others! The best thing about working with clients is seeing the smile on their face once they step out of my office! Sometimes they come in and unload on me but I'm known for making people laugh! We all have strengths, you just need to find yours and share it! Strength is a dynamic word. Can be physical, mental, or emotional. Some synonyms for strength are: power, might, energy, force.

I encourage you to make a list of your strengths and do something every day to use them.  No one likes failing, so instead of focusing on fixing your weaknesses, why not strengthen the attributes you already have mastered and teach them to others? In order to figure out what your strengths are, ask yourself these questions:

-What are you doing when "time flies by?"
-What do others say you do well?
-What do people come to you for advice for?
-What makes you happy and warms your heart?
-If you could do anything with your life and money was not a factor, what would you do?

Just some things to think about that will steer you in the right direction and your purpose in life!
 :-)

Be Well!

Foods to Support Your Thyroid

7:51 PM Jackie Mart 0 Comments

Thyroid problems affects millions of people around the world believe it or not!  The conditions resulting from thyroid problems can be extremely serious. As a regulator of hormone production and metabolism, the thyroid needs to function properly to maintain optimal health. The good news is, there are nutritional steps you can take to help support your thyroid!!

The thyroid needs very specific nutrients to maintain proper function: iodine, selenium, iron, and zinc.

The following foods provide quality dietary sources of these necessary elements. They also include complete nutritional content including quality protein, high quantities of necessary vitamins (such as B vitamins needed in hormone production), antioxidants and more!

1. Dulse Seaweed

Sea vegetables are a great source of iodine and dulse seaweed has been found to offer the most consistent
and highest concentrations of iodine. This purple-brown sea vegetable is full of potassium and is an excellent source of protein. (In addition to dulse seaweed, arame, kombu, nori, sea palm and wakame are also quality iodine and nutrient sources.)

2. Fish

Fish is a great source of dietary iodine, plus the amazing benefits of omega-3 fatty acids which have been found to contribute to a healthy heart. Deep sea fish such as cod and haddock contain the highest densities of dietary iodine. (Be sure fish is wild caught, NOT farm raised)

3. Coconut Oil

Coconuts are an excellent food all around, and the oil from coconut has been used as a healing food for a long time. Coconut oil contains essential fatty acids needed for proper metabolic function. These fatty acids are easily assimilated by the body and contribute to thyroid function, thyroid hormone production and regulating the metabolism.

4. Beans

Beans are a good source of zinc and iron. They also provide quality proteins and are an excellent source of B vitamins, vitamin C, and fiber.

5. Liver and Kidney Meat

Although not appropriate for vegans or vegetarians, these organ meats, especially beef liver, provide iron, zinc and selenium as well as high-quality proteins. They also provide a more complete, nutrient-dense source of calcium, potassium, Vitamins A, C and D, and the B vitamins than most fruits and vegetables. Again, if you go this route, select products from organic, vegetarian-fed animals.

6. Almonds

While most nuts are an excellent source of proteins, minerals, vitamins and fiber, almonds provide a potent
source of nutrients needed by the thyroid. Almonds combine quality values of iron, selenium and zinc with essential B vitamins and high protein content.

7. Turkey

For a lean protein source, turkey is an excellent source of selenium. It also contains iron and essential amino acids. Again, opt for organic, vegetarian fed animals.

8. Dark Green Leafy Vegetables

Why choose one when any of the dark leafy veggies will work? Spinach, kale, collard greens, swiss chard, mustard or turnip greens are all a great source of iron, B vitamins (needed for hormone secretion), Vitamins A, C and D, magnesium and their incredible antioxidants. These superfoods not only supply the nutrients the thyroid needs, they also help protect overall health.

Recharge

5:07 PM Jackie Mart 0 Comments

Time for another post on LIFE! I like to incorporate all aspects of life into my blog posts besides nutrition, exercise, and toxins. Taking time out to recharge is essential to our physical and emotional health. It can mean the difference between burnout and excelling.

I took the day off yesterday and lived in the moment. Spent some time with a great guy and was happy with myself and where I am in life. I don't usually let myself unwind because I am always doing things to better myself and improve my business. I'm not one to stay up late or sleep in because I do not like the feeling of "wasting" a day. But yesterday was an exception and I loved it! I even slept for 11 hours last night!!! That is unheard of for me! LOL! My body needed the rest and I'm sure it was greatful that I allowed it to recharge!

If we take care of our bodies we have more energy and are more inclined to take care of others. When we feel GOOD we are able to handle what life throws our way! My friend just sent me this song and I love it so I thought I would share it with you! Go into each day thinking it will be the best one of your life!

Food Intolerances Could Be Making You Fat

2:41 PM Jackie Mart 0 Comments

70 to 80 percent of the United States population is intolerant to one or more foods!  This number is believed to be rising due to several lifestyle factors in our modern world: processed foods, convenience foods, corn and soybeans in EVERYTHING, food colorings and additives, preservatives, and etc.  Most doctor visits are for misdiagnosed food intolerances.

There is a difference between a food "allergy" and a food "intolerance".

Food Allergy:

Definition- the body reacts in the predictable fashion-with an immune system attack that results in symptoms such as sneezing, coughing, or a skin rash.  (peanuts, soy, dairy products, shellfish, etc.)  (immediate reaction)

Food Intolerance:

Definition-when protein molecules or one or more chemicals in particular foods cause a complex series of reactions eventually causing white blood cells to react.  Reactions may include: leaky blood vessels, increased production of mucous, chronic inflammation of tissue, contraction of the smooth muscle of the lungs, intestines, and stomach, and general disruption of biochemical processes. (may not show up for days later..)

Common Symptoms Include:

Acne, anxiety, arthritis, asthma, ADHD, Autism, bed-wetting, chronic diarrhea, chronic fatigue, depression, diabetes, ear infections, eczema, hay fever, headaches (tension type and migraine), inflammatory bowel disease, muscle aches, obesity, panic attacks, stuffy nose, watery itchy eyes, weight gain, bloating, and etc.

We crave the very foods we are most intolerant to! They be disguised and may not show up until hours or days later.  If you eat the same things day in and day out your body cannot fully get rid of the residue and your body will eventually start to attack it causing the symptoms listed above.

Food allergies and intolerance commonly causes inflammation in the gut.  The greater the level of inflammation in your digestive system, the greater likelihood that your abdominal muscles will NOT respond to exercise.  (paunch belly)

When overweight people remove intolerant foods from their diet, their brain chemicals, metabolism, and digestive system normalize.  Their food addictions vanish, their metabolism functions at its optimum rate, and their water retention disappears-without deprivation low-calorie diets, dangerous diet drugs, and endless hours of exercise.

Taking Action against Food Allergy and Intolerance:

Blood Test: ALCAT that I offer. This is a computerized blood test which measures any changes to white blood cells in presence of common foods, environmental chemicals, pharmaceuticals, molds, herbs, soy, gluten, dairy, candida, and etc. This test is much more reliable and accurate than skin scratch tests and ones done at your doctor's office.

If the white blood cells become enlarged, burst, or shrink, these changes set the stage for serious health problems that develop immediately or perhaps years later. Cost varies depending on the different test panels! Please contact me for more information! 712.790.5883 Jackie@OptimumWellnessMN.com
